A Winter class (Finally!)

I will admit it, I'm always a bit late to the party…  We "Crafter People", (ie ME), are supposed to get those holiday project ideas knocked out in, say, May. I will admit here and now that my mind does not do Christmas in May! It doesn't even do Christmas in September OR October. Apparently, my crafter brain doesn't really get into the Christmas swing until mid-November. Sheesh...

Snow Happy Hoop Art by Val's Art Studio

Well, I finally get a bright idea, then put it in motion, and when it's all done, it's obviously time to re-evaluate. This snowman hoop (above) as a class project will take any novice oh... about 16 hours to complete. So, it's back to the drawing board. How about plan B? I think we can manage this one in about a 2-3 hour window:

This fun Holiday Snow Happy Hoop class will be offered at Paper Tales on Dec 15 from 2-5pm. Call over to sign up... 619-222-2510

Simplifying 101

Back in January, I told myself and the world that I would be simplifying my life after the first of the year, and after what always seems to be the busiest holiday season yet. Even though it's been difficult to do so, I have said "no" to several shows and events. I have allowed all the Mother's Day show deadlines to come and go... I didn't bat an eye at saying "not this time", though did feel a wee pang in my heart.

This is kinda how I feel right now... and, indeed, little quiet bunnies are all I have been able to make as of late. I am a quiet bunny right now as I wait the fate of something big, and celebrate many workings of things great, yet small. Life is funny that way, isn't it?

This sweet quiet bunny will be offered as a class at Paper Tales on May 18 from 2-5 pm. I hope you will hop on over and join me as we enjoy the quiet, meditative task of needle felting, sewing and stuffing full of fiber. It will be worth every quiet minute. :o)

And, a needle felted bear class is on the schedule for May 5th too... you can find info on that right here.

A Springtime Class at Paper Tales!

I sent this photo to Michelle at Paper Tales, and she called me right away, "Oh MY God!!! This has got to be the cutest thing you have EVER made!" Oh my golly, how I do agree! Yep... most people send their kids to school with a lunch box. Mine? I send them with a 4 page court order to "Stay Put". Ummm, it's a long story, but the message is clear: the more difficult my life, the cuter the needle felted creations become...

So, the class date is St. Patties Day, March 17, from 12-5 pm. I promise I will serve green cookies, and will allow a break for lunch... That is if you really want to take a break, Lol! Most times, those 5 hours fly by in a flash, and we are left wondering where the time went. It is all together too much fun! And if you need a break from fun, sweet springtime bunnies, and magic, then I will bring you back down to real life, and explain just what a "Stay Put" order is all about. Wow, I'm learning more than I ever thought I would about the undercurrent of the school system, and how things are really done there...

So, give Paper Tales a call to sign up. And remember to bring your needle felting tools! This class only requires the foam mat, a set of Fine needle felting needles by Clover, a pair of sharp scissors, and the "pink pen" style needle holder (optional). And just one more thing... The roving I used on the bunny is all used up, so we will be using something different. Have no fear, your bunny will be every bit as adorable as this one... I promise!

See you on St. Patties Day!
xx, Val

Mini Owl Class is This Saturday!

Well, I cannot resist a pair of oh-so-cute owlies... I don't know about you!

If you feel the same, then give the girls at Paper Tales a call, (619-222-2510) and get yourself signed up for this fantastic earring class, happening this Saturday, Feb. 25, from 1-4pm. Don't miss out, or you will be boo-HOOT-hoo-ing all day long (sorry, I just couldn't resist, hehe!)

Owl see you later!
x, Val

PS. Please read this post if you plan to take the class so you remember to bring the necessary supplies to class. See you on Saturday!

Owls on holiday

Even the teeniest owls love a good time. Just wait til you see what's been going on with my newest creations. They've been pretty busy...

First of all, I'd better explain that Toshi has been such a patient and wonderful helper for me in studio. She just doesn't complain about anything I ask her to do. Even when it comes to making the tiniest needle felted creations. Afterwards, she shyly confesses "that wasn't exactly the funnest thing you've had me make..." I totally understand, for even though these little guys look like they should be dang easy to make, they are an exercise in patience. I'm warning you about that! But Toshi is a good sport, and we made up an awesome couple of owls, don't you agree?! They are being made for the upcoming Earring class I'm teaching at Paper Tales on Feb.25th. Click here for more info on that class!

So, no sooner were one pair of owls finished before they had to go explore...

Here they are in the garden, searching for snacks in the succulents...

Then, a dip in the pool, and sunbathing...

They spent some time wistfully gazing over the canyon and watching the birds in action...

Finally finished up their outing with a ride on the giant Lola dog.
(Isn't she so sweet and patient?! Lol!)

What a day! They have confessed they are ready to be tethered to earrings so they can get their kicks while going along for the ride!

Ok, that's our adventure for today :o)
Hope you are having an adventurous day today too.

New Classes at Paper Tales!

Yep, classes! Hooray! The first class is Sat, Feb, 11 (um, kinda today... sorry for the late notice), but it's already filled up, so don't feel like you are missing out. We are working on a new date to run this class again. Call over to Paper Tales 619-222-2510, and tell them you must know the new class date, so you can sign up right away! Hurry up, because the last class filled up in about a minute.

The next class will be Super-duper Sweet Birds or Owls Sitting on a Cage. Aren't they cute?! I know I only have pictures of the birds, because the owls aren't even done yet... what can I say? Life has been throwing me lots of curve balls lately... This class will run on Sat, Feb 25th from 1-4. Plenty of spots are still open in this class, so give those girls at Paper Tales a call and sign yourself up!

Each class is $35, and includes one kit for you to complete the project in class, and wear your creation home! Extra kits will be available for purchase during the class so you can practice those new needle felting skills on your own.

Remember to bring the following supplies to class!
  • Needle felting foam mat (not the brush style mat)
  • Green 5 needle tool
  • "Pink pen" 3 needle tool
  • Replacement needles by Clover, "Fine" size
  • A pair of small sharp scissors
  • Jewelry making tools; 2 needle nose pliers and a small wire cutter (you can use mine if you don't have them)
I can't wait to see you in a class very soon. Save some room for a cookie or two :o)

Needle Felted Russian Frieda and Friends

Ladies, your creativity astounds me! Your willingness to venture into the unknown, wielding a sharp stick (needle), blindly working fluffy wool and taming it into a manageable form, tricking the needles to make your smile look like a smile, and an eye do what an eye is supposed to do (look cute!). Taking a risk to give your sculpted wool a unibrow, buttons on a too wide belt, mixing wool color like paint. You were all wonderful students, and make my "job" way too much fun. For that, I thank you....

Dania went the extra mile with the unibrow. So cute!

Awesome needle felters Linda, Estella, Dania, Tekla, and Penny. Robin and Belle had to scoot out before this picture was taken. Here are their creations, many still a work in progress...
You can still sign up to take this class, wanna-be-needle-felters! Call over to Paper Tales, and sign up quick before all the spots disappear. You will be so happy you did!!

Hey All You Needlefelters!

Were you at Artisans' Alley today? Did you visit me, and see I wasn't laying prone in my booth?! (:o) Yea! I'm happy you came!) Do you want to learn how to Needlefelt in a similar style as I do? Well, now you have the opportunity! Call over to Paper Tales, and get yourself signed up for my CLASS! Next Saturday, Dec. 12 from 3-6 pm, you can learn how to make an AWESOME Needlefelted Birdy book cover. It's so magical and cute! It will be the start of your needle felting journey, and I will teach you how to do exactly the same thing as what I do. Once you learn the basic step, you can take it into any direction your heart desires. Hooray! So, call over to Paper Tales right now! and get yourself signed UP. The class is limited to 10 people, so Hurry UP! You'll be glad you did :o)

PS. I wrote this post 1.25 hours after I returned home from Artisans' Alley, and after my husband made me a very stiff martini. I don't know how my typing looks, and it's a good thing my computer tells me when I make a mistake, because there's LOTS that needs fixing here!

PPS. I loved seeing ALL of you today, and your comments ROCKED, make my DAY and YEAR spin out of ORBIT, and make everything I do completely worthwhile. I love you and all your support more than you will EVER know! xxxooo :o)

My Best Model

Um, that would be me. Yep; Me, Myself, and I. But, as my mom so generously put it last week, "Well, Val, most women aren't as 'hippy' as you are, and most women are a little bigger 'up top.'" Uh, yeah, thanks Mom, I know. (See that look on my face? that's the 'thanks, I know' look)

So, I'm needing to buy myself a dummy. One of those dressmaker's dummies. One that's more a 'regular' woman's shape. I think I'm going to need one that's adjustable, so I can make up size 6s and size 10s and size 12s. I just think my friends are getting tired of me measuring them in all the private places, boob wise and all. The biggest dilemma is where to store such a dummy. When one works out of their dining room in their small beachside house, it's awfully hard to disguise an adjustable dummy. When one also lives in a house of boys, it's even tougher still. I can hear it now; "Mommm, don't even think of putting that thing in HERE." *sigh*

So, speaking of dressmaking, that's what I've been up to. Not exactly dresses though. More like vests. They are slow and pretty painful at this point. One, because I don't have the dang dummy. And two, because I'm designing them as I go. No patterns, just images out of my head. I love how they are turning out though, so that's a good omen. These vests are my answer to the dilemma of felted sweaters for women. Women of many sizes, because the vests are adjustable, and can be sized like this: "One size fits many". That works, doesn't it? I like the sounds of that!

So, one day finished, the next day, gone. Cause that's what's going on tomorrow. Beth from Somerset Publications wants to meet me and my vests in person. So, off we go to Laguna Niguel, and we are presenting ourselves, and hopefully will make a positive impression on the people of Somerset. They are keeping my vests for a spring publication, BUT they only get them for one month. Then the vests are going into the Chargers Fashion
Show that's happening in November. But more about this later...

These vests are a combination of felted wool or cashmere, fashion fabric that I haven't been able to resist by the likes of Heather Bailey or Tina Givens, and needle felted irresistibles by yours truly. (Uh, that would be me.) The true art is definitely in the needle felting, but also in the craftsmanship, and especially the sewing. I take a huge amount of pride in my sewing skills, stemming from learning from my mom at aged 7, to spending babysitting money on patterns and fabric in my teens, to being a poor fashion-aholic in my 20s, and learning to copy fashions (sans patterns) from Vogue Magazine. Needless to say, these vests are beautifully made, top to bottom.

So, take a gander, as I am. I need to look at them, photograph them, touch them (so soft!), and talk about
them. I've put alot into them, and so I will miss them. Things like this are normal for me. Probably by next week, I'll be over them and onto the next item. In fact, a new birdy painting came to me today. Can't wait to get the sweaters and fluff off the dining room table so the painting and stitching can begin! It's pretty much a whirlwind around here, don't you know it!!

Lastly, this weekend (Sunday) is my Felted Book Cover Class at Paper Tales. The class is limited to 10 people, and last I checked, 6 people had signed up. Call over to Paper Tales 619-222-2510 to get yourself signed right UP so you can make yourself that cutie pie book cover!

And, very much, the final item, this Saturday is the Strut For Sobriety Fashion Show, a Jeff and Jer event! I have been invited to participate as a vendor along with my friend Judy Thacker of JudiPatudi. We will be showing a myriad of items, but mostly our sweet recycled lines of needle felted children's clothing. So, if you're there, stop by and say Hi!

Now, do I have time to get to that birdy painting?...

A Few of What's New

I have had a few very creative weeks as of late, and would love to share some of the "What's New" with you! Take a peek, and then take a moment and let me know what you think :o)
New for the Fall will be Women's Vests made from a combination of recycled felted wool, cotton designer fabrics and recycled fabrics. Here's the first one, titled "Peaceful". Each will be unique, one of a kind, only available in a One-Size-Fits-Most format. I am very excited about this development, and only hope I can manage to crank out several in time before the Holiday shopping season gets underway.
Most beloved and beholden (for me right now :o), a Book Cover Creation for an upcoming Needle Felting class at Paper Tales. Though it's been many years since I was an avid scrap booking person, I still have fondness in my heart for this creative endeavor. When Michelle and Diane asked me to come up with a book cover for the chipboard books they sell, it was an easy task to accomplish, and I loved creating this felted cover. The Needlefelted Book Class will be offered Sat, Sept. 19th from 2-4:30 pm. The cost is $58.00 with all materials included, except for the needlefelting mat and needles/needlefelting pen. (You can purchase these supplies on the day of the class at a discount) Sign up early since the class will be limited to 10 people! Call over to Paper Tales to enroll; 619-222-2510.
Oh, Nellie, will you take a look at this! This is a sweet creation is made from one of my very favorite old tablecloths. I took it out to use it last week, and low and behold, the patched hole in the very middle of the tablecloth had come apart, and was now a gaping Black Hole, ner' to visit the patching wand again... Just not able to bear putting it into the give away bag, I decided the tablecloth needed repurposing as something very sweet and girly. Add a singing needle felted bird, and voila! The most adorable girlie-ish dress (made from a top and a skirt) possible! Now on sale over at Austin's Gallery, but certain to not remain there for long!

On a side note, I took a quiz on Facebook called "How Girie are you?" My result said I'm 100% girlie. Now that didn't surprise me one bit! How about you? If you are on Facebook, take the quiz, and let me know your result. If you're not on Facebook, just let me know what YOU think your Girlie level is. I'll plan a drawing for everyone who comments, and the winner will receive one very girlie needle felted item from my shop. The drawing will take place Friday, August 7th. Good luck, Girlie girls!

Thinking About Weddings...

Well, it's been nearly 18 years since I married my sweetheart honey Greg, but I couldn't help but think about all the wonderful times we had planning our big day when I visited this fabulous wedding site, Once Wed. I love the premise of "Designer Weddings for Less", I love the recycled wedding dresses for sale, I love the homemade style invitations from Bird and Banner. I love the just picked bouquets from the sweet garden flower arrangements.

But what sent me over the edge was the DIY section, and particularly the Rustic Wedding Cake Stand. Okay, now THAT about makes me want to get married all over again! Either that, or have a Wedding Cake Party where everyone wears white and dresses up in flowy garden dresses... walking around and sipping champagne, eating slices of this yummy cake... sigh... Just how DO I get manage to get myself into these sidetracked situations?!

Okay, back to the real world...

I want to thank everyone who signed up to take the Felted Birdy Pin class tomorrow at Paper Tales. The class is full, with two people even coming over from AZ(!) to take the class. Wow, now that's needle felting dedication! I have received several requests for a class in Coronado, and will put my thinking cap on about where and when to schedule this. We could really have the class right here in my own back yard. I'll keep you posted about this. Be sure to let me know if you're interested (if you haven't already), so I can add your name to the list.

Just a side note about Once Wed... they are located in PA. Seems like all the cool stuff is happening out in PA... What's up with that?!

Needle Felted Bird Pin Class This Saturday!

Hello all, and Happy Summer to you!

It's a joyful day for me when it starts out with the birdies singing from the treetops. Well, that is, if they don't get going too early in the morning! I really cannot take the mockingbirds with their all night songs, but we're not going there now...

So, here's how you can put a singing bird in your heart, or at least close to it, with a sweet needle felted bird pin. I am teaching this class on Saturday, July 11 from 2-4 pm at Paper Tales in Point Loma. The cost for the class is $33, and includes everything for making up this pin
except for the foam needle felting mat and needle felting needles. Please bring your own, or you can purchase them from Paper Tales for a 10% discount on the day of the class. Also, I recommend a 3-5 pronged needle felting needle holder for flat felting. You can also purchase these from Paper Tales if you don't own one.

Here's the beauty of flat needle felting: You can make pins, or felt onto sweaters, or anything wool, OR, you can use flat felted sweeties to adorn about anything your heart desires! Think scrapbooking, flower vases, multi media canvas art... why, the sky's the limit!

So, call over to Paper Tales at 619-222-2510, and reserve your space today! Happy felting!

PS. If you are a Coronado resident, and are interested in a needle felting class held in Coronado, please email me, call me (I'm in the phone book), or leave a comment here. If I have enough interest, I will schedule a class here in town. Thanks!!

Birdies Nesting At Paper Tales

We had so much fun at Paper Tales for the first ever Needle Felting Class taught there (by me, yours truly :o). We crafted beautiful birdies sitting on their eggs in a nest. It was a special day for this class, being right before Mother's Day. I thought it a sweet gesture that several girls wanted to give their hard work as gifts to their own Moms. Now that's a true gift from the heart. Especially since these were 4+ hour birdies! Look at their finished projects.
Cristina's sweet new friend
Lisa K.'s super sized birdie was all the rage once she finished
Here's Jennifer's bluebird. Aren't they pretty together?!
Lisa S's birdie was so beautiful

Me, I worked out a new birdie too. She'll show up at Austin's Gallery after she's had a little time perched where I can see her every day. Everyone needs some sweet birdie happiness to adorn their day.

Our next Needle felting class has been set for June 13th at 2:00. This one will be a wonderful felted bear. Call over to Paper Tales to sign up. You won't want to miss out learning this wonderful craft. Don't worry, I'll bring the bandaids!
